That is a good point. Although I think with smoking it will be more effective because the trade off is much lower. With smack, crack and anything else you get a significant high, with smoking you get fuck all.

Re: New Zealand to Ban Smoking
As I said earlier, I don’t have a problem with this and I’d be surprised if there isn’t massive support for it. Would be much different if they were making it illegal for everyone as that just criminalises people overnight.

Much more worrying is the NZ govt setting up a fund to pay journalists who promote the government line. That is pretty fucked up.

Of course, but hopefully you make establishing a two-packs-a-day habit cost-prohibitive in the process.

Smoking is a slow-burn, daily addiction. It’s the way that it slotted into general life that makes it addictive - having a beer, break from work, long, boring drive. Bit like booze to be honest.

It’s hard to build it into daily life if it’s hard to get hood of an expensive. Not that it can’t happen, but maybe less likely to is a win.

Stopping someone from starting in law and stopping them in practice are two different things.

If they weren't, they'd be no heroin users or coke-heads.

Re: New Zealand to Ban Smoking
They are approaching it in a reasonably coherent way - not trying to tell someone already smoking that it’s banned, but making it harder for anyone young now to start. You can combine that with education.

Given how frustrating it is to quit it’s hard to say stopping someone from starting is a bad idea

Re: New Zealand to Ban Smoking
Smoking rates are very much down on the past.

It'll be a long time before no one smokes, but banning it won't bring that time any closer.

Just look at the already banned drugs. Organised crime's product of choice.

not really, people have been educated about the pitfalls of smoking for 50yrs, still kids and adults smoke.

Banning smoking is a stupid short-cut that won't work.

Education's the way to go.

Do you think that’s reflective of the fact the pair of you seem to struggle to process information and are unable to assess relative risk?

I'm also a smoker Lily.

My brother is an actuary, he told me he will start smoking (or say that he's smoking) when he gets near to retirement and buys his annuity.

Driving cars, including electric ones, at 20mph or above could be outlawed following this logic, especially if it’s for “non essential” reasons.

I’m a smoker and a driver, but I think this would make more sense than mandated experimental jabs.

I don’t support any of these ideas.

Probably be a better idea in NZ (and most of the west) to stop cosanguineous marriages

I know that you hate Jews but please lay off with the sodomy?

It took a couple of years and a a fair few Bob to make her mum not testify.

This is a very good idea.
It’s not a relevant argument to talk about freedoms being suppressed. Unlike some other vices, smoking negatively affects not only the smoker but the unfortunate passive smoker. Trying to prevent people from starting at a young age is the right thing. No it’s not perfect but it’s the right thing to do.

They should ban single parenthood because kids raised in single-parent families are at greater risk for a variety of unfortunate outcomes.

There's an unlimited number of idiotic ideas that people will support in order to 'do the right thing'.
